The Foundation: It was formed by Pi Zosaphlui (Mrs. Catherine Ellen Williams, Wife of Rev. D.E Jones) She used to work as a Missionary in Syhlet under the Wales Mission in 1894-1902 and in December 1903 she married Rev. DE Jones. In 1904, she joined her husband in his mission work at Mizoram and in January 14 she reached Aizawl. Seeing the lower status of the women in the Mizo society, she works to uplift their position by teaching them about women’s health, tailoring, knitting and how to bathe their children. Rev. DE Jones even wrote that “Pi Jone-i would organise women’s programme once every week on Friday night at the Church where women who participated would learn how to give sermons and share their spiritual experiences and journey. (A Missionary’s Autobiography p. 47). Since, the date and time of the programme remains unknown since it was not mentioned or recorded. The SEC considered the foundation of the “KohhranHmeichhia” at the Central Committee of 304:10 of 21.12.2000 to be 1904 since it was believed that Pu Hluii already started her work with the women right after she arrived in Aizawl.
Guidance: For better administration, a manual book was published in 1981 and it was to be revised under the supervision of the SEC. The motto of KohhranHmeichhia is ACTS 1:8. The main reason for the establishment of the “KohhranHmeichhia” is –
1. To fulfil the mission work of the Church
2. To encourage the formation of a good Christian family
3. To help those in need in the name of Christ.
4. To spread the Gospel
Administration: It has a well form administrative system –
1. For individual Church: With the knowledge of the Church Committee, the group is formed and as per instructions, its members are than elected to become a part of the Committee.
2. In the Pastor’s Area: In order to unite Women of the Church within the Pastor’s domain, BialKohhrnaHmeichhia is formed and the Church itself is responsible for appointing its leaders and members. Every February, BialHmeichhceInkhawmpui would be held and would plan out programmes and activities for the KohhranHmeichhia and would also receive orders arriving from the Centre as well.
3. The Central Committee:The BialKohhranHmeichhe Committee functions to unite all the mission works of the KohhranHmeichhia throughout Mizoram and members are selected and appointed by each of the church from their local area. The term for each appointed member is two years and after serving for two years they can be re-elected for the same post for another one year. The Chairman for every Conference is selected by the SEC and the General Secretary is a woman appointed by Synod itself.
4. Since 1960, the Committee would organise a conference each year but since 2005, it was done once every two years. One representative form every church is appointed by every church for the event.
Census: According to the 2012 census, there are 974 Presbyterian Church in Mizoram with 1,15,572 families (1,88,060 individual members) out of which 75,876 (65.65%) families would have devotion time every day. The number of registered Buhfaitham is 1,13,644 (98.33%) families.
Other Ministries:
1. It functions to lay a firm Christian value for within every family. To a family devotion every day, to separate Buhfaitham every time they cook rice, to bring the knowledge of Christ to their children, to give importance to God through prayers and to teach the role of and function of each one the family members. In 1970, a friendly competition was made to reward those who fit the above criteria and a small honorary trophy and citation would be given to those deemed worthy.
2. To function as a uniting factor amongst the different works and mission of the church. It would contribute to the large conference organised by Synod and they would also have fix budget for Synod Hospital, Aizawl Theological College, Rescue Homes, RamtharRawngbawlna (Ministry for the Expansion of the Gospel) and other mission works as well. They would also support their individual Church and Pastor Quarters as well.
3. They also prioritised charity works and support people and individuals who are in need of help.
4. Their objectives include the spreading of the Gospel, and they would always support missionaries through financial means and prayers and sometimes visit these missionaries who are working amongst the non-believers.
5. Leadership Training: Giving Leadership Training to members of the church is one of the most important works of the Committee and it will work to make sure that new, reliable and capable leaders are produced form the members of the church.
6. Buhfaitham (Gathering of Rice): The responsibility of looking after Buhfaitham is given to the KohhranHmeichhia by Synod. The process of gathering the rice, selling the rice, and campaigning for the development is also the responsibility of the committee. Rs 15,90,87,664/- was generated in the financial year of 2021-22.
7. KohhranHmeichhe Day : As appointed by SEC, the last Friday of November is to be considered and celebrated as KohhranHmeichhe Day since 1997. The reason Friday was chosen was because Pi Hluii (Catherine Ellen Williams) would held the first congregation with KohhranHmeichhia in Friday.
Agape Newspaper : In the year of 1986, KohhranHmeichhia published AGAPE newspaper bi-monthly and from 1996, it was published monthly. 43000 copies are currently under publication. The newspaper would contain sermons, Articles, Bible Study, cooking ingredients and health instructions as well.
Women’s Centre : One of the most notable features of the KohhranHmeichhia is the establishment of the Women’s Centre at Phunchawng. Synod Moderator laid the foundation stone in August 12, 2011 and in August 12, 2015, the construction of the centre was completed with the budget of Rs 5,41,71,00.00. The purpose of the centre was to empower and help women to become a productive member of the society and skills such as tailoring and weaving are also taught in the centre. Women who completed the course are also handed certificate and new admitted members are welcomed with revival crusade and according to 2022 records, 275 women have completed their training on tailoring and 28 women have completed their training on weaving.
Hmangaihna In : An orphanage was opened by the Mizoram Presbyterian Church in 1986 and in August 22, 1992 it was handed over to the KohhranHmeichhia. It was first intended for 50 orphans at the beginning but since 2022, every newborn up to 10 years can stay without limitations for numbers.
