The Synod 1992 emphasized the importance of secular education, where Middle Schools and English Medium Schools were given top priority for establishment. This idea was then given to the Synod Executive Committee (SEC) to become a full fledged practice, which would then be handed over to the Synod (1992 Synod, Gen. 38). The 1993 Synod Inkhawmpui then declared that the SEC shall take the initiative and measures to start the schools (1992 Synod, Gen. 44). The SEC quickly sprung into action to start schools that are to be under the care of the church, and two schools were opened, one on 18th January, 1995 at Serchhip, and the other on 17th February, 1995 at Zarkawt. They were initially called ‘Presbyterian School’ in mention and writing, and over time, the terms Presbyterian School and Presbyterian English School were used interchangeably. Starting from 2012, the schools were officially titled the Presbyterian English School (PES).
PES guidelines
Although Presbyterian English Schools were established with granted permission from the Synod Executive, the respective Pastors of the schools and the school Management Committee had greater authority in the administration. As suxh, in order to create a unified guideline for all the Presbyterian Schools under the Synod, the Synod Education Board created a manual, where the first manual was released in 1995. The manual witnessed numerous changes over time, and these changes are then put into practice with permission from the SEC. The Presbyterian English School Manual has been created with complete instructions and guidelines.
Funds received from Synod
As time passes, all the Presbyterian English Schools are expected to be self-sustaining institutions, where the fees collected upon the students shall be dependent on the Management Committee of each school and on the economic conditions of the location. Aside from the fees, the Management Board and the Pastors of the area are also responsible for the number of teachers employed, along with the amount of their pay.
All the PES that has been approved by the SEC are given a Building Grant in two installments, and a Lumpsum Grant in order to aid the schools in giving their employees proper pay. This same Lumpsum Grant is not granted to schools within the city, and they receive an Adhoc Grant instead. If any of the schools are capable of opening upto High School within the state government, a separate Up Grade Grant is given to the school. All PES with severe financial troubles are given assistance with accordance to their needs.
HSSLC Result
A function is organized annually to celebrate the results of the HSLC exams. Those students who have passed in Distinction class are given special prizes, and students who secure especially good grades are given prizes as well. All PES with 100% passed in their respective schools are given also given appreciation and special prizes, and the top three of all these schools are given
The growth of Presbyterian English School (PES)
As of 2022, there are 155 PES, with many pending requests still being processed by the Synod. The existing schools are given good upgrades over time, and with the number of PES increasing annually, there is still a lot of room for development.
